PANJIM: Candolim Sports Club squeezed past Wilred Leisure Sports Club 5-4 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of London Football Trophy tournament organized by Goa Velha Sports Club at Goa Velha ground, Tuesday. Candolim led 1-0 at half time.
Candolim received Rs 60,000 while Wilred Leisure took home Rs 40,000.
Candolim started brightly and could have taken the lead but Paul’s lob over an advancing Wilred goalkeeper Custodio sailed over the bar. Later, Canute’s try just missed the target.
Bapu secured the lead for Candolim when his power-packed shot from the top of the box off a pass from Kleiber crashed into the far left corner of the Wilred goal.
After resumption, Wilred attacked the rival citadel and could have surged ahead but Bruno’s header went over the Candolim crossbar. Later, Marshal kept Wilred’s Sertorio’s shot out and Milagres’ tap off the resultant rebound was saved by Atish on the goal-line.
Wilred continued attacking but Candolim goalkeeper Marshal denied Joaquim with an acrobatic save. They finally restored parity when Tony Dias’ left-footer beat a couple of Candolim defenders and the goalkeeper.
In the tie-breaker, Claiber, Terrance, Sigmund and Sagar scored for Candolim while Bruno, Joaquim and Anthony netted for Wilred.
