Candolim, Marc Caterers in quarters

MAPUSA: Candolim Veterans got the better of Mapusa Veterans 2-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the late Mathew Braganza all-Goa veterans football tournament organised by Morod Angod Friends Circle, Mapusa, at Duler stadium, Mapusa, on Sunday.

After a barren first session, Shanker Palyekar broke the deadlock off a corner-kick taken by Patrick Gonsalves.
Subsequently, Shanker secured his brace as he gave a finishing touch to an assist from Francis Fernandes.
On Saturday, in the inaugural match, Marc Caterers defeated Joe Cookies, Loutolim 5-4 vie the tie-breaker.
At half time, Joe Cookies were leading 1-0.
Joe cookies took the lead through Melvin Fernandes’ header off a corner kick taken by Menion Miranda leaving no chance to Marc Caterers goalkeeper Chandrakant Naik. 
Crossing over, Marc Caterers regrouped with renewed ideas and found the equaliser through Inacio Afonso in the 48th minute off a through pass by Bobby Crasto. 
Marc Caterers could have taken lead as Marcus Carvalho was brought down in danger zone by Gil Soares and referee awarded penalty. But Chandrakant Naik missed the chance by shooting wide. 
In the resultant tie-breaker, Mark Caterers converted through Brian Diniz, Remmy Baretto, Marcus Carvalho and Chandrakant Naik while for Joe Cookies Derrick Pinto, Melvin Fernandes and Gil Soares were on target. Benny Cardozo of Joe Cookies was the man-of-the-match. Earlier, chief guest Ryan Braganza declared the tournament open.
