PANJIM: Candolim Sports Club grounded St Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna-Siolim 2-0 to move into the semi-finals of 16th Parish Youth Vagator All-Goa inter-village football tournament organized by Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club at Ozrant ground, Vagator, on Wednesday.
Marna had a good opportunity to forge ahead in the 11th minute but Steven Fernandes shot straight into the hands of the rival keeper. Then, Sagar Bhatkande put Candolim ahead in the 15th minute following a good move by Devendra Pednekar.
Sagar almost doubled the lead but his effort hit the crossbar and went out of play. Down by a goal, Marna went all-out in search of the equalizer but Aldrid Fernandes could make the most in a one-to-one situation.
Changing over, Marna had a golden opportunity to draw level when they were awarded a penalty by the referee after a Candolim defender handled the ball in the penalty area but Maneesh Nair failed to convert from the spot-kick. Devendra Pednekar made the issue safe for Candolim scoring off Thomas D’Souza.
