MAPUSA: Candolim SC registered a hard fought 1-0 win over St. Savio’s SC in a GFA’s First Division match at Duler stadium, here on Tuesday.

The all-important goal for Candolim was scored by Sahil Naik.

Candolim had the better of the exchanges in the first session. In the 12th minute, Candolim’s Brian Mascarenhas let go a power-packed shot which was superbly fisted over by St. Savio’s goalkeeper, Selwyn D’Souza.

Three minutes later, Brian Mascarenhas sent a teasing cross towards the rival goal to his teammate Shankar Shetye, who was, however, a bit late to connect it. Another cross by Brian was blocked by St. Savio’s defender at the expense of a corner. From the resultant corner, Sankar Shetye tapped it goalwards but it rebounded off the post.

St. Savio’s came out strongly on crossing over and should have taken the lead in the 5th minute. Under-20 Jovito Fernandes collected a through pass from Under-20 Crespo D’Souza, moved down and drilled a stiff grounder which hit the goalpost and rebounded into play.

Play was then mostly restricted to the midfield with both the teams hardly testing the goalkeepers.

At the stroke of 90th minute, Candolim’s substitute Sahil Naik got hold of a ball inside the 18-yard box and scored from a goalmouth melee.

At Guirim ground, Geno FC defeated A. A. de Moira 2-0. Geno scored once in each session of play through Under-20 Soham Mardolkar (20th minute) and Satish Konkonkar (77th minute).

At Salvador do Mundo ground, Salgaocar FC Juniors drubbed Dunes FC 5-0.
