PANJIM: Defending Champions Candolim Veterans defeated Max Veterans, Colva 5-4 via the tie-breaker after the teams played a 1-1 draw in the round 16 of 2nd all-Goa Quepem Veterans Rolling Cup football tournament, organized by Navyug Vikas Manch, Quepem at Borimoll Sports Complex ground, Quepem, Wednesday night.
At half time the score was 0-0 draw.
Max Veterans with an all star line-up which included Chandrakant Naik in goal, Alfred Fernandes, Roque Carneiro, Mathew D’Costa and Lawrence Gomes dominated the match and would have come out victorious but the Candolim goalkeeper came out with some superb saves.
In the second half, the teams came with renewed vigour and pressed for a goal.
Max Veterans finally succeeded when Lawrence Gomes 25-yard powerful shot deflected the ball off the goalkeeper hands landing straight into the net as the ground was slippery due to rains.
Claudio Pacheco equalized for Candolim five minutes before the final whistle to level 1-1.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Candolim proved to be better shooters. Candolim Veterans will meet Raia Veterans in the quarter-finals.
