MARGAO: Hosts Goa tore into Madhya Pradesh with a 6-1 demolition in the West Zone under-15 Coca Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy sub junior National football championship, at Holy Trinity ground, Benaulim, on Wednesday. Goa led 4-0 at the breather.
The highlight of the day was a brilliant four goal blitz including a hat-trick by captain Borris D’Mello that left the visitors bleeding. Malcolm Gonsalves and Mackenzie Fernandes also added names to the impressive scorer list while Girish Vishwu Karma scored the consolation goal for Madhya Pradesh.
Goa were favoured to win the clash and Malcom Gonsalves opened the scoring in the very fifth minute as he beautifully executed a free-kick from just outside the box that gave no chance to Madhya Pradesh goalkeeper Shubham.
In the 15th minute, Borris made it 2-0 when he punted the ball to the far corner of the net after picking up the ball from Malcolm.
Again Borris struck for the second time in the 27th minute after he dribbled past a host of rival defenders and punted the ball to the far corner of the net to give his team a 3-0 cushion.
Madhya Pradesh replaced goalkeeper Subham and brought in Shivam but the latter did not help his team as the hosts troubled the rival defence more vigorously.
Mackenzie Fernandes added his name on the score board in the 40th minute when he punished the rival goalkeeper with neat finish.
Post resumption, Goa slackened their pace a bit and allowed their opponents to launch barrage of attacks and they reduced the deficit in the 47th minute when Girish Vishwu Karma beat the rival goalkeeper with nice placement.
Any thought that Goa would take their foot off the accelerator wiped away when captain Borris struck his hat-trick in the 65th minute. Soon, in the 70th minute he drove the final nail into rival coffin.
Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva was the chief guest and inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Schubert Furtado, North Goa GFA Vice-president and GFA executive members Welvin Menezes, Jaju Fernandes, Anthony Pango, Arnaldo Costa, Anthony Leo Fernandes and John Silva.
Goa coach Remmy Coalco was elated with the three points. “The boys played well today and I am happy with the overall performance of the team,” said Colaco.
In another match, Maharashtra thumped Gujarat 6-0 after leading 4-0 at the breather. The hero of the day was a splendid hat-trick by Kamarsan Ansari.
Maharashtra outplayed their opponents in all departments of the game and pushed them on the back foot. Kamarsan Ansari who was the hero of the day opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Krish Adhikari doubled the lead in the 21st minute. Pranoy Karate increased the tally in the 23rd minute. Aniket Verekar inflated the tally 4-0 in the 31st minute.
The second half did not bring any relief to Gujarat as their opponents attacked from both the flanks. Kamarsan struck twice in the 64th and 90th minutes to register his hat-trick.
