Cavelossim stun Calangute Association

Margao, Feb 4: An injury time goal by striker Vitorino Fernandes helped  Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim to defeat Calangute Association 1-0 in GFA First Division league at Cuncolim school ground, on Friday. There was no score at half time.
Santa Cruz enjoyed a slight edge over their opponents and had clear two scoring chances to surge ahead but striker Vitorino Fernandes spurned chances. Later, Levino Fernandes missed the golden opportunity to put his team in front but he shot wide from close range.
Cavelossim gained the upper hand in the 28th minute when striker Vitorino Fernandes was brought down by Calangute defender Ali inside the rival penalty box and referee Judas awarded the penalty. Midfielder Desmond Fernandes took the spot but squandered the golden opportunity as his try hit the crossbar.
Calangute Association made a couple of frays into the rival territory but they failed to get past the Cavelossim defenders.
Crossing over, Calangute Association were an improved side as they went into the attacking mode and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids.
Midway in the second session,Calangute Association nearly broke the deadlock but Cavelossim goalkeeper Flyod came to his side rescue as he fisted away a strong header from Varindrajit Singh off a cross from Manuel Crasto from the left. Later, Manuel Crasto’s pile driver missed the target narrowly.  
The Calangute Association had their share of chances but the rival goalkeeper blocked Aiken Dias try.
In the 85th minute the referee erred as Cavelossim midfielder Desmond Fernandes retaliated against a Calangute player and instead of flashing the red card, he cautioned him with a yellow. “The decision angered the Calangute bench which was not happy,” said Calangute coach Valentine Ezeugo.
With the match heading for a barren draw, Santa Cruz struck the match-winner in injury time. Following a swift cross from Stephan Baretto from the right, Calangute defenders fumbled to clear the ball and lurking striker Vitorino Fernandes placed the ball to the far corner of the net with loud cheers from Cavelossim supporters.
With this win Santa  Cruz Club of Cavelossim collected 16 points and remained undefeated and at the top of the table from six matches while Calangute Association suffered their third defeat and have 12 points.
Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes said, “I am happy with the performance of my boys. We missed many chances in the first half. I believe in my boys and they always play for a win and will continue to play well in the reaming matches.”
Meanwhile the supporters of Calangute Association who were unhappy with refereeing rushed towards the supervising officials and used abusive language but Fabian D’Souza cooled tempers.
 Meanwhile there was no board for the fourth official for substitutions as he had to tell them personally by calling the players jersey numbers.To make matters worse, there was no stretcher and they had to make use of a makeshift polythene stretcher.
