CORTALIM: Chandor Sports Club edged past host Cortalim Villagers Sports and Social Welfare Association 2-1 to lift the 23rd Cortalim Villagers Cup Inter-Village football tournament, at Cortalim church ground, on Sunday.
Chandor SC took the lead in the very eighth minute as Velroy Fernandes headed in past Cortalim keeper Johny Vaz.
Subsequently, Chandor SC doubled their advantage as Melroy Moura unleashed a scorching volley that crashed into the rival nylons to make it 2-0.
Crossing over, Cortalim Villagers were awarded with a penalty which was calmly converted by Shubert Pereira in the 34th minute.
They came close to score again in the 37th minute as a free-kick by Shubert hit the goal post and went out of play.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded to First scorer of the final: Velroy Fernandes. Player of the final: Shurbert Pereira and Best goalkeeper: Presly Mascarcanhas of Chandor Sports Club. South Goa MP, Adv. Narendra Savoikar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runner-up in the presence of guest of honour Hiliario Figueiredo, Ramakant Borkar and parish priest of Cortalim church.
Earlier, in the exhibition girl’s match, Cortalim Villagers defeated Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim 1-0. The goal was scored by Valanka D’souza in the 10th minute. Sandeep and Anton Fernandes compered while Sandeep proposed the vote of thanks.
President of Cortalim Villagers, Antonio Vas welcomed the gathering.
