NAVELIM: SCC Cavelossim defeated Churchill Brothes SC 2-0 in the GFA U-20 TACA Goa football match, at 3MTR ground, Navelim, on Thursday.
Both teams started on an attacking mode right from the first whistle.
In the 6th minute, Churchill Brothers’s Nevil Soares had a glorious chance to give his team an early lead but the lad shot wide with only keeper at his mercy.
At the other end, Cavelossim missed two chances in quick succession. First Aaren D’Silva’s left footer missed the target by whiskers and then Vegan Ferrao saw his effort sail over the bar.
After dominating the first quarter, Cavelossim continued pressing hard and restricted Churchill play in their territory. However, the next quarter witnessed Churchill Bros earn three corners, but they failed to cause any damage to their opponents.
Finally Cavelossim broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when, on receiving a pass from the centre, Aaron took a powerful shoot that gave no chance for the rival keeper.
Down by a goal, the Red Machines pulled up their socks and worked as a unit. Red’s Sandeep Subba’s effort narrowly missed the target in the 37th minute. Cavelossim led 1-0 at break.
Post resumption, Churchill Brothers pressed from the first whistle and almost scored the levelled in the 56th minute but were unlucky as they were twice denied—first by the crossbar and then by alert rival keeper Sanjay Gupta.
Delbert effort came off the cross bar back into play to Churchill’s Nash, but the latter couldn’t capitalise the opportunity as his effort was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
Just as the Red Machine were getting back into the game, Aaren took the match beyond their reach by scoring his second of the evening.
The lanky striker rose the highest to guide a corner kick to the back of the nets.
Aaron should have earned his hat-trick, but his goal-bound shot deflected off a Churchill defender in the dying minutes of the match.
