With virtually the last kick off the game, Israil Gurung found a pocket of space in the box and netted to give Churchill Brothers a 1-0 victory over Dempo Sports Club in Kingfisher Pro League at Duler Stadium, here on Saturday.
Ten minutes into the second half, Churchill’s Odafe Okolie missed a penalty as he saw his attempt come back off the right post.
Churchill played well and closed down their opponents quickly. Durga Boro worked hard after coming on for Odafe in the second half.
Dempo matched Churchill territorially but their usual possession game suffered on an uneven ground. Covan Lawrence played out off his skin to keep Odafe in check for most part of the game.
After 15 minutes, Beto’s effort went over the bar from a distance after good play.
Just before half time, Odafe gracefully skipped past his marker and played the ball to Israil, whose short was saved by the Dempo keeper.
Having been on the field for only three minutes, Churchill’s winger Jaison Valles blazed a trail across the Dempo box. After receiving a return ball, he was clumsily brought down by Dempo custodian Tyson Caido. Odafe missed the resulting penalty.
Odafe battled on for another ten minutes before being substituted and watched the remaining part of the match from the sidelines looking like a wounded soldier who had just returned from war.
In the 65th Dempo missed a great opportunity to take the lead when Clifton Gonsalves missed from close range after latching onto a Nicolau Borges’ cross.
Towards the end of the game, Dempo brought in Godwin Franco and Micky Fernandes who increased the tempo of the match and allowed Beto to move into a centre forward position.
In injury time Joe Rodrigues’ attempt at goal was saved after he received a pass from Godwin Franco on the edge of the box.
In the fourth minute of injury time, Israil broke clear and fired low to grab the winner.
