MARGAO: Churchill Brothers SC-GFDC edged past Sirlim SC 1-0 to emerge as champions in GFA’s U-16 football league, at Ambelim ground, on Saturday.
The all-important match-winner was netted by Wellington in the 20th minute.
With today’s victory, Churchill totalled 30 points, having recorded 10 victories in a row. The match against Don Bosco Oratory is yet to be finalised, even though it will have no bearing on the standings.
Churchill Alemao, MLA and president of the club congratulated the players, coaching staff and other staff for their excellent performance which led them to top of the prestigious local league.
“The boys, coaches, managers and other staff, the GFDC deserve a big pat on their backs for shaping the team into a powerful winning combination that resulted in successive victories. The record speaks for itself. Proud of you all,” added Churchill.
Valanka Alemao, CEO of Churchill Bros, who took a personal interest in the youth league, praised the players and the entire staff for the excellent performance.
“Everyone played their roles very well with a single minded devotion. It was a great team effort and team spirit. I am indebted to GFDC and especially Dr Rufino Monteiro, chairman and Aleixo D’Costa, CEO and member secretary, and GFDC members for the great collaborative effort, despite some shortcomings. It was a great team work with the entire staff relying on the basics and skills which in the end tilted the scales heavily in favour of the team and shaped into a winning combination. Youth development is critical for the development of Indian football and I am sure, such a success will help to a great extent in the overall upliftment of the beautiful game in our state and country,” stated Valanka.
“It was great associating with the GFDC with Aleixo and their staff working wholeheartedly along with our coaches and head coach Marcelino for the great performance, when otherwise there was no avenue to field all the GFDC boys in the official football leagues along with the other local boys,” added Valanka.
