MARGAO: Churchill Brothers Sports Club outclassed Vasco Sports Club 3-0 to advance into the second round of GFA Knockout football tournament, at Cuncolim ground, Cuncolim, on Thursday.
The Red Machines scored all the goals in the final eight minutes of the match. Emmanuel broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute while Nicholas Fernandes doubled the advantage in the 86th minute. Three minutes later, Nigerian Odafe Okolie scored the third goal of the evening.
The teams complained about non proper ground marking and hard surface. The match was delayed by 15 minutes after the ambulance arrived late.
Post resumption, The deadlock was broken in the 83rd minute when central stopper back Emmanuel headed past Vasco goalkeeper Francis Fernandes off a Nicholas cross from the right.
Churchill Doubled the lead in the 86th minute when midfielder Nicholas beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish off an Ashley Fernandes assist.
Odafe Okolie atoned his earlier miss and punished the rival goalkeeper with deft a placement in the 89th minute.
In another match, Curtorim Gymkhana humbled Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem 7-2 at SAG ground, Assolna after leading 3-0 at half time.
The high light of the day was a brilliant hat-trick by Austin Fernandes.
Curtorim Gymkhana dominated the game and pushed their opponents on the back-foot. Welton D’Souza opened the scoring in the fourth minute and soon doubled the lead in the 18th minute.
Austin Fernandes made it 3-0 in the 45th minute. The second half belonged to Curtorim Gymkhana who pumped three more goals. First, Mariano Rebello made it 5-0 in the 75th minute. Three minutes later, Austin Fernandes struck for the second time and in 89th minute, he register his hat-trick.
For Guardian Angel Sports Club, Vincy Fernandes and Maclon Colaco reduced the margin.
