MAPUSA, SEPT 2
A spirited late fightback from Youth Sports Club of Colvale saw them snatch victory as they defeated Sirsaim Sports Welfare and Cultural Club 2-1 in GFA’s Third Division at St Christopher ground, Tivim on Thursday. There was no score at the lemon break.
In a dramatic three minutes, Philino Ratos created two goals for Colvale and also received the only booking of the game for a reckless tackle. The rain poured down heavily before half time but the ground was still in a playable condition.
After being out played in the first half, Colvale started to make substitutions to replenish tired legs and eventually turn the tie in their favour after the breather. Milton Lobo came in for Eduard Pinto in the 49th, Aidan Fernandes came in for Anthony Xavier in the 57th and Joel Fernandes replaced Deep Govekar after 70 minutes.
Without even looking seriously threatening, Sirsaim gave Colvale a few things to think about. Drynan Pereira was super for most part of the game, marshalling the defence. Shane Tumedo was bristling with intent in midfield and Domnic D’sousa made good runs off the ball in the attack.
For all their trying, Sirsaim failed to kill off the game. Colvale custodian Rolex Rebello made three comfortable saves from Sameer Sawant, Domnic D’Sousa and Shane Tumodo.
Mahesh Kambli fired Sirsaim ahead in the 55th minute after the ball bobbled and bounced awkwardly through the Colvale defence. Fourteen minutes from the end, Colvale’s Philino Ratos swung in a free kick from the right. Defender Alex Fernandes popped up to head home the equaliser unmarked and unannounced in the rival box.
From the restart, Philino lunged in to commit a foul and went into the referee’s book in the process.
Sirsaim were in a hurry to restart the proceedings, unfortunately for them Colvale regained possession and counter-attacked. Philino received the ball on the right and played into the middle where it was clearly dispatched by substitute Aidan. Worrel D’Sousa made a great double save to deny Colvale stretching the lead.
