MAPUSA: Cortalim Villagers SWSC scored two late goals to stun Sporting Clube de Goa 2-1 in the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Memorial Trophy match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Friday.
Sporting Clube opened their account through Alister Anthony (60th minute) only to find Prathmesh Gaonkar and Saeesh Halarnkar score two goals in the added time.
Sporting Clube coach Armando Colaco played the same squad in his starting XI, while Cortalim Villagers in charge Jude Barreto brought three changes – goalkeeper Savio Pereira and defenders Velroy and K.Dhanushraj, which played in their last league match.
Goa Professional League champions Sporting Clube were indeed a better side, where their midfielders skipper Lloyd Mascarenhas, Biswa Darjee and Ahongshan Meitei, kept their strikers busy upfront. However, Rohan Rodrigues and Biswa Darjee drives from inside the 18-yard box were brilliantly saved by Cortalim Villagers’ goalkeeper Savio Pereira.
Cortalim Villagers’ stopper backs Clive Miranda and K Dhanushraj with keeper Savio managed to keep their team slate clean as the teams marched into the dressing room.
The Flaming Oranje carried on their onslaught on crossing over where a superb curling shot by Biswa Darjee was paired to safety by custodian Savio.
Finally, at the strike of an hour Sporting Clube striker Alister Anthony receiving a loose ball inside the 18-yard box latched a stiff grounder to the far corner of the goal 1-0.
Six minutes later, Sporting Clube should have doubled their lead but custodian Savio brought a full stretched diving save to deny Llyod Cardozo from scoring.
Custodian Savio came with two more out of the blue saves to deny Sporting Clube’s strike Llyod Cardozo from scoring.
When it looked it was curtains down for Cortalim Villagers they not only equalised through substitute Prathmesh’s diving header but scored the match winning goal through Saeesh’s clinical finish from close, 2-1.
Cortalim Villagers custodian Savio received the man-of-the-match award from Adler D’Cruz, Goa Football Association’s secretary.
In the next match, Sesa FA drubbed Mumbai City FC 5-1.
Mumbai City colts stunned their opponents with a seventh minute goal where a scorching right footer by Hashan Sartape crashed into the far corner of the goal, 1-0.
Stung by the reverse Sesa FA lads exerted tremendous pressure on the rival citadel where after a couple of missed chances scored two quick goals in the 12th and 16th minute through the boots of Omkar Shetgaonkar from close and Chaitan Dabolkar from 25-yard distance, 2-1.
Just four minutes into the second session and Sesa FA’s substitute Joshua D’Silva was brought down by Mumbai City’s Tanukush Pandey prompting Referee Ritesh to point to the dreaded spot. Joshua D’Silva scored.
As the match progressed, Omkar scored two quick goals to complete his hat-trick, 5-1.
Sesa FA’s Omkar Shetgaonkar received the man-of-the-match award from Dr. Caitano Fernandes, Goa Football Association’s president.
