DABOLIM: Churchill Brothers striker Cristian Lagos who went missing prior to the crucial match against Pune FC, at Tilak Maidan on Sunday, is now believed to have left the country.
While colleagues of Lagos feign ignorance of his whereabouts, it is learnt that the Costa Rican player has left the country, for reasons not known.
The last time Lagos trained with the team, he did not appear disturbed but in fact content and happy, being his usual self, according to his teammates.
Sources informed Herald that Lagos is believed to have left Churchill Brothers club and returned back home.
Churchill Brothers Technical Director Subash Bhowmick confirmed that he has heard that Lagos had left the country.
“But the reasons for his sudden departure is not known to me,” he informed.
Whether Cristian Lagos’ departure would affect the club’s fortunes in the remaining I-League matches, especially with the club fighting relegation, Bhowmick asserted that the club would manage without him.
“His absence would not impact Churchill Brothers performance in the remaining matches. We earned three points out of nowhere on Sunday, without him on the pitch,” said Bhowmick.
The Costa Rican’s inclusion in December had boosted the Red Machines performance in the AFC Cup matches. Lagos netted a brace against the Maldives side.
When asked if any disciplinary action would be initiated against the Costa Rican, Bhowmick instantly replied that it’s the decision of the management to deal with.
When asked about the efforts made to get Lagos back. Bhowmick disclosed that he has not yet spoken to the club supremo Churchill Alemao.
Bhowmick further pointed out that when he took charge of the team, the team had one point from eight matches. “The club is doing fine and we can manage the team with the local talent,” stated Bhowmick.
Bhowmick is known to exploit local talents and does not stress much on foreign players.
Efforts to contact the CEO of Churchill Brothers Valanka Alemao for confirmation if striker Cristian Lagos had parted away with the club apart from leaving the country, proved futile.
