Cuncolim MLA demands probe into National Games projects

MARGAO: BJP Government in Goa encouraged mass corruption in administration with its “Mission 30 Percent Commission” which has ultimately resulted in the National Games moving to Gujarat, alleged Congress Working President and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao on Thursday.

He said that the decision of the Indian Olympic Association is a slap on the so-called Double Engine BJP Government which failed to create necessary infrastructure for the National Games in the last ten years.

“There was mass corruption in all the projects initiated by the Government for National Games, which resulted in substandard work. Crores were spent on refurbishment of stadiums and sports complexes. The corruption was exposed by nature itself when 300 tin sheets of Nehru Stadium at Fatorda were blown away by the winds two years back. Recently, the top ceiling of the same stadium collapsed,” stated Alemao.

The MLA further said that the signs of poor-quality work are already visible at the stadiums built at Pernem, Navelim which need urgent attention.

“The Government failed to construct the swimming pool at Panjim in time. The swimming pool at Margao has also been non-operational for the last many years,” said Yuri.

He said the Government also miserably failed to get good coaches on board to train the Athletes representing Goa. There was no preparation to ensure Goa winning maximum medals during the National Games. The shifting of the games is in fact a blessing in disguise for the Goan’s as the poor preparations would have brought shame to the State in place of laurels.
