Cuncolim outwitted strong contenders Rebello Pendal (Maina) 11-10 in the 1st All-Goa Invitational Lalit Suri Football Cup-2010 opener via the sudden death after the teams played a goalless draw at full time here on Sunday.
In the other match, Navelim XI beat Assolna XI 3-0.
The tournament has been organised by Lions Club of Canacona which has been sponsored by The Lalit Intercontinental Resorts, Rajbag, Canacona. In all, 12 teams are participating. The winners will get Rs.50,000 and the runners-up Rs.30,000, besides take-away trophies and daily man-of-the-match and other individual awards.
Saurabh Fatarpaekar, guarding the goal in the penalty shoot-out brought off a spectacular save off the 22nd penalty to take Cuncolim in the the second round.
Fatarpekar, who otherwise played the entire match in the middle won the man-of-the match award of Rs.500.
Assolna scored all three goals during the second session. Dominic Fernandes, Vincent Coalaco and Joseph Dias scored.
Dominic won the man-of-the-match cash award of Rs.500 for his delightful defensive play.
Earlier, the tournament was declared open by The Lalit Intercontinental Resorts, Rajbag-Goa General Manager Shrikant Wakhardkar in the presence of Manager (PR & Liason) Guilherme Martins, Canacona Lions president Motesino Fernandes, organizing chairman Sandeep Dessai, Lions district additional cabinet secretary Mario Fernandes, club treasurer Lawrence Barretto, members Caitano Fernandes, Vishwas Dessai, Manuel Martins.
On Monday, Bachelor Boys of Salcete (Raia) and Milbern (Ambelim) emerged winners on the second day. Both results were decided via the tie-breakers as both games ended in goalless draws at full time.
It was the spectacular display of football by young lads from Canacona that made Lalit (White) as the favourites and they pulled-off a win, at times with only the goalpost coming in their way, after twice beating Bachelors Boys goalkeeper Joseph.
In the tie-breaker, Gines saved the first penalty, giving another shock to the some of the stars from Salcette. However, two of the strikers shot wide, finally surrendering the match 4-3 to Raia team.
It was a drub affair between Milbern (Ambelim) and Fatorda XI.
In the penalty shoot-out, Milbern goalie Benny saved one, while one of the penalty was shot wide by the Fatorda player. Milbern’s player shot hit the goalpost and Milbern emerged eventual winners 4-3.
Milbern’s Senegal Fernandes earned the man-of-the-match award of Rs.500.
