CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim Union defeated United Club of Benaulim 1-0 to book their final berth in the All-Goa 9th Cuncolim Union Trophy organised by Cuncolim Union at Government school play ground, Cuncolim, on Tuesday .
Cuncolim Union started the game on positive note with their forwards troubling the rival defence with well orchestrated raids.
The lone goal of the match in favour of Cuncolim Union was scored in the 15th minute when Treyson D’Costa slotted the ball past the rival goalkeeper with a smart header off a floater from Frazier Fernandes.
Stung by the early reversal, United Club of Benaulim strikers made several forays but failed to beat the rival defenders.
United Club of Benaulim had a chance to cancel the lead when Xavier Fernandes unleashed a stiff shot which was well blocked by rival goalkeeper Shaikh Sahil.
Unfazed, Cuncolim Union had couple of scoring chances but Bharat Gaonkar’s rasping shot missed the mark narrowly.
Thereafter, Cuncolim Union breached the rival defence in the opening session but were guilty of missing sitters.
In the 19th minute, Cuncolim Union nearly doubled the lead but striker Treyson D’Costa shot wide much to the disbelief of Cuncolim Union supporters.
Ozie Fernandes of Benaulim missed clear opportunities as the team were trailing 0-1 at lemon break.
After change of ends, Cuncolim Union continued to exert pressure, it was in the 50th minute that Micky Fernandes’ power packed shot sailed over the cross bar. Cuncolim Union pressed hard to enhance their lead but couldn’t capitalise on the opportunities. At the other end, United Club of Benaulim went all out looking for an equaliser but to no avail.
