PANJIM: Cuncolim Union scored a resounding 4-0 win over Varca Sports Club in the ongoing Lourdes Soccer Cup, organised by Ambelim Sports Club, and played at Ambelim ground, on Friday.
Cuncolim Union began the match on an attacking mode and scored early in the game when Sangam Gaunkar, on receiving a pass from Rosario, made his way into the box and rounded past the rival keeper to make it 1-0.
Varca SC were totally outplayed in the opening minutes of the game, as their opponents hardly game them a chance to settle in the game. Varca were soon down 0-2 in the 11th minute after Rosario go on to the score sheet with a fine finish that kept the rival keeper unmoved.
Varca SC had the chance to pull a goal back but Elvis’ free-kick hit the cross bar.
At the other end, Cuncolim scored their third as Sangam completed his brace in the 20th minute with a fine volley. Minutes later Sangam nearly scored his treble but the Varca SC keeper dived to his length to deny the striker his hattrick.
Varca had their chances in their way, but their striker failed to keep their composure in front of the rival goal. Cuncolim keeper Jeston denied Jhonus D’Costa with a fine save in the second half to keep his clean sheet. At the other end, Cuncolim scored their fourth through Bharat Gaonkar. Varca had another opportunity to reduce the margin when Jhonus was brought down in the box by Cuncolim’s Jeston, forcing the referee Mcenzie rightly point towards the penalty spot. In the resultant penalty, Columbus shot wide. Moments later, Columbus missed another chance to score from touching distance.
