CAVELOSSIM: Cuncolim Union, playing a fast paced game, drubbed hosts Cavelossim 4-0 to enter the semi-finals of the Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup Inter-Village football tournament organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim and played at Fr Druston and Wellington ground Cavelossim.
Cavelossim combined well in the first half with Raju Cardozo and Aswil Afonso displaying cohesion but were undermined by erratic shooting. Cuncolim, on their part, went close but Dilon Carvalho was denied by goalkeeper Aaren Fernandes in the sixth minute.
Cuncolim, however, took the lead against the runoff play when Melvin Fernandes scored from Dilon’s assist, to lead by a goal at halftime.
Crossing over, Cuncolim changed their strategy and began using their flanks to get around the Cavelossim defenders.
The pressure told and in the 40th minute Cuncolim received a golden opportunity to go further ahead when referee Mario Rebello pointed to the dreaded spot after Aston Vaz handled the ball. Trijoy Dias, however, blasted the penalty over.
Cuncolim, though, were not to be denied and their man of the hour was Daulat Desai who scored three goals in quick succession. His strikes in the 50th, 55th, and 60th minute brought up the second hat-trick of the tournament.
Cuncolim now meet the winners of Betalbatim SC and Roseman Cruz, Nagoa, in the semifinals.
