MAPUSA: Curtorim Gymkhana scored a hard fought 1-0 win over St Savio’s Sports Club in the GFA’s GENO First Division League match played at Duler Stadium, here on Thursday.
It was Cliff Barreto`s header in the 30th minute which gave Curtorim win in their last league outing.
Calangute started the match positively but their attack fizzled out once inside the opponents goal area.
It was Curtorim who surprised Calangute by taking the lead in the 30th minute which proved to be the match winning goal by Cliff Barreto whose firm header from Nalister Silveira`s well measured cross crashed into the nets, 1-0.
Calangute had two chances to get back on terms before the breather. First  Samuel D`Souza who after outfoxing a couple of defenders let go a rasping shot which was well saved by Curtorim keeper Johnson Bhagot. Minutes later U-20 Richard Cardoz who was found by Rajat Chopdekar with an intelligent pass saw his placement go agonizingly inches wide of the target.
Changing end, Calangute`s Rajat setted up substitute Chaitan Dabholkar who could not keep his shot goal-wards.
Calangute kept raiding their rival’s goal time and again this time Suraj Kauthankar goalbound shot was well blocked by Curtorim defender with U-20 forward Aman Govekar providing the pass.
Curtorim who were on the back for most part had two decent openings to consolidate their lead and seal the match but Milagres Fernandes seemed to have forgotten his shooting boots at home as he could not hit the target from handshaking distance after being teed-up by Nalister and Desmond Pereira.
Meanwhile, SCC Cavelossim scored a narrow 1-0 win over Salgaocar Football Club at Ambelim ground, on Thursday. Denson Fernandes scored the lone goal of the game.
