RAIA: Curtorim Gymkhana got the better of Saligao United 2-1 to move into the quarter-finals of the 47th All Goa Custodio Memorial football tournament organised by Raia Sporting Club, at Raia panchayat ground, on Wednesday.
In the 4th minute, Curtorim’s striker Jessel Carneiro took control of the ball from Marcus Fernandes dribbled past Saligao defender Amar Halankar and shot from the edge of Saligao box but Saligao keeper Jason D’Mello was equal to the task.
At the other end, Saligao’s Micheal Dias power-packed shot hit the Curtorim side netting in the 7th minute.
It was Curtorim striker Milagres Fernandes who netted the first goal of the match with a placement shot in the 11th minute.
Three minutes later, Milagres Fernandes doubled the account for Curtorim.
The best chance for Saligao came when a penalty was awarded by the referee in the 30th minute when Curtorim’s James Fernandes was intentionally brought down Saligao’s Sachodanand Satelkar inside the six-yard box of which Nikhil Naik of Saligao took but Curtorim keeper Johnson Bhogot judged the latter’s angle and dived to save the penalty.
In the 31st minute, Saligao’s Govind Mahale took a free-kick which fell at Craig Menezes’ feet who crossed the ball to Jagganesh Goletkar who tapped the ball inside the Curtorim nets to make it 1-2.
Curtorim Gymkhana will now meet the winners of Dicarpale SC and Raia SC in the quarter-finals on July 7.
