MAPUSA: Curtorim Gymkhana Sports Club struggled before getting past Holy Cross Sports Club Armabol 2-1 in the GFA First Division League match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday.
In their first leg encounter both sides played out a 2-2 draw.
The teams adapted to midfield tactics in the first 30 minutes of play, with moves few and far between.
Arambol came with the first threatening move of the match when in the 32nd minute Stepelton Fernandes set up Dalesh Pednekar whose powerful shot struck the legs of the defender and rolled out of play.
Four minutes later Arambol custodian Neville Rodrigues did exceedingly well to deny Cliff Baretto from scoring.
Couple of minutes later Curtorim once again came attacking when Jesmon Soares sent a perfect pass to Welson Fernandes who made no mistake in slotting the ball home, 1-0.
Arambol came twice close to level terms before the breather, however first Vivek Naik’s 30-yard strike was collected by Curtorim’s Shubham Naik and minutes later Shashank Ashvekar saw his curling free-kick miss the target narrowly.
Crossing over, Aramabol seemed determined to turn the match in their favour. Dalesh Pednekar saw his powerful shot from outside the 18-yard box ricochet off the Curtorim cross piece.
After much probing Arambol finally managed to equalise when Curtorim keeper failed to hold on to Stepelton Fernandes’s shot and the ball rolled towards Myron Britto who did the all important task of scoring, 1-1.
In the 83rd minute of the match Welson Fernandes scored the match-winner for Curtorim when he nodded in Nelson Fernandes’ free-kick, 2-1.
At Don Bosco ground, Panjim, Panjim Footballers hammered Goa Velha Sports Club 4-0.
Panjim Footballers led 1-0 at break as Prisco Moura gave host the lead just before the breather.
Crossing ends, Panjim Footballers scored three more goals through
Akeraj Martins (47th minute), Dialon Gama (71st minute) and Daryl Costa (81st minute).
