MARGAO: Hosts Curtorim Gymkhana made short work of Varca Sports Club 3-0 to march into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Curtorim Gymkhana Golden Jubilee Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Curtorim Gymkhana, at church ground, Curtorim, on Friday. Curtorim Gymkhana led 2-0 at half time.
Egged by the home crowd, Curtorim Gymkhana virtually toyed with the rival weak defence and pushed their opponents on the back-foot.
Striker Milagres Fernandes put Curtorim Gymkhna in front in the 10th minute when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish off a pass from Anthony Cardozo.
Curtorim Gymkhana doubled the lead in the 23rd minute when striker Sertorio Monteiro unleashed a power-packed volley that crashed into the net. Varca Sports Club had an up hill task as they struggled to penetrate inside the rival penalty box
Post resumption, Curtorim Gymkhana continued to dictate terms and created many openings but their forwards were erratic inside the rival penalty box.
Varca Sports Club had a golden chance to reduce the margin but striker Agnelo Rodrigues muffed a sitter with only rival goalkeeper to beat. Curtorim Gymkhana increased the tally when Sertorio Monteiro beat the rival goalkeeper with a deft placement after picking up a through pass from Roy Alburquerque.
Down by three goals, Varca Sports Club went all out but Nigel Pires blasted wide from hand-shaking distance.
