MARGAO: Curtorim Gymkhana shunted out Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 5-4 via the tie-breaker to storm into the semi-finals of all-Goa 41st Chandor Seamen Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Chandor Club, at Chandor ground, on Sunday. The teams were locked 1-1 at full time.
The teams started the game on a cautious note as the heavy down pour made life miserable for them.
Both tried hard to get into a rhythm and find the opening goal. They created a few chances due to the ground conditions but their strikers could not convert when opportunities came their way.
Crossing over, they showed urgency and the match turned livelier.
As the match progressed, the deadlock was finally broken by Francis Baretto in the 40th minute for Sao Jose de Areal. Francis’s hot-blooded strike was too hot to handle for the rival keeper.
However, their joy was short-lived when Mario Mascarenahs turned in the equalizer for Curtorim Gymkhana with a stiff grounder.
In the penalty shoot-out, Neville Fernandes, Anthony Cardozo, Nelson Fernandesnd Roy Albuquerque kept their cool and calmly scored for Curtorim Gymkhana.
While Agio Antao, Mariano Rebello and Silvester Carvalho were the three players who managed to find the mark for Sao Jose de Areal.
