VASCO: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated Goan Warriors Football Club Madel 2-0 to sail into the quarter-finals of the 44th Bandodkar memorial football tournament organised by Baina Sports Club, at MPT ground, Vasco, on Thursday.
Curtorim Gymkhana went in the lead in the 31st minute. Earlier in the 20th minute, Curtorim’s Milagres Fernnades’ power packed shot hit the cross bar and deflected back into play which was cleared in nick of time by Goan Warriors defender Shane Temudo for an abortive corner kick.
Hard working Nelson Aranha went in the attack and collected a back pass from Clive Colaco before he took a rasping shot into the nets to take Curtorim into the lead, 1-0.
After change of ends, Warriors made some fast moves in the Curtorim area but their prolific forwards Tushar Dessai and Milind Shinde could get past Curtorim’s deep defence led by Anthony Cardozo, Savio Fernandes and Manuel Castanha.
In the 47th minute fleet footed Milagres Fernnades darted the ball towards Goan Warriors goal and effected a deft placement to the far end of the nets, to the surprise of Warriors goalkeeper Madhu Salgaocar making it 2-0.
Milind Shinde of Goan Warriors was adjudged the man-of-the-match which was handed over by chief guest Rochana Borkar.
