PANJIM: Damodar English High School, Gudi-Paroda secured victory by defeating St Joseph Chandor, 2-0, in the Sub-Junior South District Hockey tournament finals, held at DSYA ground, Seraulim. The match saw Damodar EHS taking the lead in the 26th minute through Sailesh, who received a well-timed pass from Ansh Goankar. Sarvesh Goankar continued the momentum by scoring the second goal in the 28th minute.
Despite St Joseph’s attempts to make precise passes, tight marking prevented them from scoring in the third and fourth quarters. In the 45th minute, Abdul Kantrski had an opportunity to bring his team back into the game, but Gaurav Gaonkar’s effective marking led the shot wide.
In the last quarter of play, Vaishnas and Vellono Dias coordinated well, but the latter fumbled in the area, missing the chance to put the ball in the net.
In the girls’ section, St Judes HS, Betalbatim triumphed over Perpetual HS, Navelim with a 3-2 score. Shaista Shaib of Betalbatim played a key role, scoring two goals in the 9th and 20th minutes. However, Perpetual Navelim initially took the lead in the 6th minute through Seitha Rao.
During the third quarter, Perpetual HS Navelim scored through a penalty corner by Prisdy Periera. The third goal came from Vanya Rodriguez, who executed a spectacular solo effort from the centre.
Chief guest Polly D’Cruz, president of Seraulim Club and guest of honour Kenadey Noranha gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of. Feral Furtado, general secretary of Gian Hockey, Abbey Bamekar, president of Hockey South District, Nelly Rodriguez, Hockey South District, and Benny Visges. Anjulo P Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks.
