PANJIM: Dempo Higher Secondary School, Cujira, beat arch-rivals Guardian Angel Higher Secondary School, Curchorem, by a 2-1 margin in a fiercely contested finals of the Under 17 Boys State Level Subroto Mukherjee Football tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs played at Santa Cruz football ground, St Cruz.
Earlier in the District Finals, Guardian Angel HSS defeated St Thomas High School, Cansaulim, by 5-0 goals while DCTs Vasantrao Dempo HSS, Cujira, defeated St. Xavier’s HSS, Mapusa, via tie breaker after both the teams failed to score during the regular time.
In the State finals it was Nash Fernandes of Dempo HSS who scored a early goal in the 2nd minute itself to give a lead for his team. Fighting back Curchorem with a good mid field managed to equalize in the 15th minutes via the boots of Gaded Mohammed Rehan. At the lemon break both teams were levelled at 1-1 goal each.
As the clock clicked both the teams tried their level best to take the lead. Both teams missed an one-to-one goal scoring but it was Ashon Vaz of Dempo who converted a decisive goal in the last minute of regular time which helped Dempo to clinched their record tittle for a second time in a row to represent the state in the National Level Subroto Mukherjee football league to be held at Delhi in the month of October.
Ashon Vaz and Nash Fernandes dominated the entire tournament at taluka, district and at state level by scoring 13 goals between themselves.
Fr Walter Miranda Principal of Guardian Angel HSS, Curchorem, Fr Johnson Gonsalves, manager of Curchorem school and Anant Sawal, State sports organiser presented the trophies and certificate to the winners and runners up.
