Dempo SC, Mohammedan draw

Golden Eagles in third place with four points; Minerva Academy are second with five points and Neroca lead the table with seven points

PANJIM: Dempo Sports Club played out a goalless draw against Mohammedan Sporting in the Second Division I-League match played at Barasat Stadium, Kolkata, on Thursday.
The Goan team squandered their chance to climb to the second position as Minerva Academy and Gangtok Himalayan SC also played out a drab draw earlier in the afternoon.
The draw leaves the Dempo SC in third position with four points, Minerva Academy lie in second position with five points while Neroca lead the table with seven points.
Dempo had plenty of chances to break the deadlock but bad ground conditions saw the visitors struggle to play and score as their best chance falling early in the first half to Felix Chidi, but the foreign recruits poor ball control in front of the goal spurned the teams first opportunity.
Dempo SC went closest to scoring at the half-hour mark but Romeo’s close range effort missed the target by touching distance.
At the other end, Dempo’s Laxmikanth Kattimani pulled off a brilliant save off a long range effort by Mohammedan player. Dempo could have gone into breather with a goal lead but Uttam Rai also saw his effort miss the target from the box.
Dempo forced another chance in second half but Uttam Rai’s header off Felix Chidi’s cross sailed over the bar.
Mohammedan will be delighted with a point against Dempo SC as the visitors clearly missed their chances to earn full points when Felix wasted another opportunity in the final quarter.
Felix should have done better when Dempo midfield passed a long aerial ball to the striker but the former simply failed to get hold of the ball cause of the poor conditions with only keeper at his mercy.
