MAPUSA: Two injury time goals enabled holders Dempo Sports Club register a 2-1 win over Cortalim Villagers SWS Club in the Goa Professional League match at Duler Stadium, here, on Tuesday.
It was another slow start from both the teams in the first session, where Dempo strikers were given very little space by the new entrants Cortalim Villagers in front of their goal.
Both the teams had just one good look at each other’s goal, before marching for the lemon break. A deadly cross by Saiesh Bagkar was brilliantly blocked for a corner by Cortalim skipper Clive Miranda.
At the other end, Velroy Carvalho’s header off Denil Rebello’s free-kick was fisted for a corner by Dempo’s goalkeeper Antonio Da Silva.
On resumption of the second session, play was again restricted to midfield except for some stray attacks by the Golden Eagles.
A fierce grounder by Dempo’s Faseen PK was blocked for a corner by Cortalim’s defender Bersal Viegas, while in the dying minutes of the match a rasping left-footer from outside the penalty box by substitute Richard Fernandes rebounded off the crossbar.
Cortalim had another close attempt at the rival goal, but Clive Miranda’s header travelled just past the far goal post.
When it looked the teams were settling for a point each, from the added seven minutes of injury time, Golden Eagles scored twice through a Pratik Naik header off Arnold Oliveira’s free kick, while Necio Fernandes latched a long ranger to double his teams lead to 2-0. However in the 96th minute, Cortalim Villagers managed to reduce the margin from a self-goal by Dempo’s Sairon Albuquerque 2-1.
