Dempo, St Xavier’s clash in final today

SS Dempo College, Altinho will take on St Xavier’s College, Mapusa in the final of the Inter-Collegiate Women Football tournament, organized by Goa University, at University ground, Taleigao Plateau, on Monday, at 9.30 a.m.

PANJIM: SS Dempo College, Altinho will take on St Xavier’s College, Mapusa in the final of the Inter-Collegiate Women Football tournament, organized by Goa University, at University ground, Taleigao Plateau, on Monday, at 9.30 a.m.
Dempo College made their maiden entry in the final by defeating Carmel College, Nuvem with a well deserved 1-0 victory. 
Carmel College were on the back foot from the start as the Dempo girls combined well and attacked from both the flanks. Keenda D’Souza scored the match-winner in the 17thminute by neatly placing the ball in the right corner after an assist by hard working Chetna Tirodker.
Leena Gaunso, Marina Rodrigues, and Anushka Viegas impressed with their skills and positional play. Carmels tried hard to salvage their reputation as Sancia Mendes, Rosehera, Adisha Albuquerque and Janice Gomes tried hard but could not score.
In the second semi-final, St Xavier’s College raised their game when it mattered most to defeat a fit and fighting Govt. College, Quepem 3-1.
Quepem started the match on an attacking mode. Speedy forward Macrena Dias came close to scoring in the first seven minutes.
A hopeful long try in the 18th minute by Alicia Fernandes from the midfield beat the Quepem keeper on the bounce to give St Xavier’s the first goal and a timely boost.
Luica Simoes made it 2-0 in the 30th minute off a pass from Jenny Silva through the middle.
In the second half, Macrena Dias gave hopes to the Quepem team when her shot was deflected of a Xavier’s defender to land in the net making it 2-1 just after the break.
Quepem’s all out efforts to go for the equalizer gave space for the Xavier’s to exploit which they did as a long  kick by keeper Astrid Pereira found Venancia Rego, who beat the advancing Quepem keeper neatly to making it 3-1 just before the final whistle.
Bethany Remedios and Riddhi Gollekar played well for St Xavier’s whereas Priscila Kiru, Jenny Monteiro, Salma Fernandes and Michel Castanha worked hard for Quepem.
