MAPUSA: Dempo chairman, Shirinivas Dempo and head coach Arthur Papas unveiled The Blue Eagles’ new jersey for the upcoming season designed by their main kit sponsors Nike in Panjim, on Saturday.
The shirts have been made up of a lighter and player friendly DriFit materiel which is said to be sweat absorbing and can help to retain moisture, keeping the player cool at the same time.
Their home kit colour is blue while the away kit is white. The other two kits, grey and red will be used during training.
It’s been a week since Papas took charge of the five-time I-League champions and the Australian has already set his eyes on winning every game with Dempo and develop their youth structure.
“It’s a pleasure and honour to take up such a big challenge at a prestigious club like Dempo. I am not new to Indian football since my time with the Pailan Arrows last season, this is a new project for me but my philosophy remains the same. I am looking forward to work with this group of enthusiastic players and also oversee the youth structure to meet the long term goals,” explained Papas.
Club chairman Shrinivas was excited about the new challenge while welcoming the coaching staff and the new signings. “Our family has been committed towards football for the past four decades and we continue to do so despite the changes in Indian football which has developed insecurity and concern for some. Our indifferent performance last term was blighted with injuries and poor fitness levels for which we have recently roped in fitness and conditioning coach Rafael Napoli from Australia to ensure the players remain in top shape. The most important aspect in our team is to maintain the team spirit and I’m sure Papas can raise it even further,” stated Shrinivas.
Even as other teams are experimenting with their combinations during practice matches, Dempo has chosen not to play any friendly games against other teams in the pre-season to avoid injuries.
Assistant coach, Mauricio Afonso was all praise for Papas and his coaching style and philosophy. “Every coach has his own style and I’m looking forward to gain experience from Papas,” said the former India international.
Dempo’s fitness and conditioning coach, Rafael Napoli was also present.
