VASCO: Devesh Anand Naik of Ponda Taluka emerged victorious in the 2nd edition of late Venkatesh & Sumathi Shanbhag Memorial All Goa open rapid chess tournament.
The tournament was played under Swiss league system with 8 rounds and was organized by Mourmugao Taluka Chess Association under the aegis of Goa Chess association at the Chowghule’s Centenary Hall, Baina.
It came down to a series of eight hard-fought matches that resulted in him winning the tournament for the second-time in-a-row.
He defeated Gunjal Chopdekar of Tiswadi taluka who was leading with ½ point till the penultimate round and would have won the title even if he had to hold Devesh in the final crucial round. Gunjal Chopdekar playing with white pieces went on to defend the game very well for a long time until she allowed a slight advantage for Devesh in the Rook & minor piece ending, which Devesh capitalised and went on to win.
Gunjal Chopdekar with 7 points due to her better tie-break score remained on the runners-up position with 7 points.
Earlier in the penultimate round, Devesh was held by Reuben Colaco. Both remained on 6.5 points, which allowed Gunjal to take sole lead since, she and Reuben suffered defeat in the last round which Devesh to clinch the title.
Paarth Salvi beat Sairaj Vernekar also to score 7 points finished on third postion. Shivank Kuncolienkar (7 pts) beat Vivaan Ballikar to finish fourth while Tanad Bandodkar(7pt) beat Reuben Colaco to claim fifth position.
