Dicarpale SC prove it in penalty shoot out

RAIA: Dicarpale Sports Club edged past St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda, 5-4 via sudden death to move to the quarter-finals of the 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club at Chandor church sports complex, ground, on Friday.

The match started with play confined to the midfield but it was St Anthony SC, which looked the stronger of the teams. Good goalkeeping by Francisco Colaco of Dicarpale SC ensured that the St Anthony SC forwards were denied three clear scoring opportunities in the first half.

A couple of counter attacks by Dicarpale SC could not yield goals as their strikers were wayward. At the lemon break, both teams failed to open account.

Changing over, St Anthony SC had many chances to score but their strikers missed opportunities galore. Sanju Trikonni scored in the 36th minute off a corner kick to make it 1-0 for Dicarpale SC. Immediately, St Anthony SC equalised in the 40th minute through Sunny Fernandes, whose powerful strike from handshaking distance gave no chance to the Dicarpale SC keeper. The match ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

The resultant tie-breaker went to sudden death with Aaren, Jaison, Lyron and Francisco scoring for Dicarpale SC while only Succour, Vicky and Allwyn were on target for St Anthony SC. Francisco Colaco of Dicarpale SC was awarded the player-of-the-match award by Gidwan D’Costa, former president of Guirdolim Club.
