PANJIM: Don Bosco College, Panjim shocked strong contenders St Xavier College, Mapusa by a solitary goal to enter the semi-finals of AC Fernandes memorial inter-collegiate football tournament, organized by Herald Group in association with GOA, at Santa Cruz ground, here, Friday.
The all important goal was scored by Sheehan Fernandes. St Xavier being the better side dominated most of the match. In the 22nd minute, they almost surged ahead when Shubham Rao Dessai’s powerful effort was paired away by Don Bosco keeper Mitesh Lotlikar.
As the game moved on, St Xavier kept applying pressure but unfortunately Anant Gad’s effort hit the top of the cross bar and fell to Don Bosco defender Paulo Joao who made no mistake to clear the ball.
The second half started in the same fashion with St Xavier trying their level best to score Shubham, Anant and Nikhil working hard upfront.
However, they were equally matched by the rival defense as Paulo and Ryan made timely interceptions.
With seven minutes left to play, Don Bosco left the St Xavier camp stunned as they broke the deadlock.
Anthony Fernandes won the ball in the midfield and sent in a defense splitting through ball to striker Sheehan, who sprinted past a defender and placed the ball past St Xaviers keeper Frazer Fernandes, 1-0.
In the final minutes, match referee gave marching orders to both Sherwin Fernandes of St Xavier and Saiesh Naik of Don Bosco after the duo got into a heated argument.
Don Bosco now meet Fr Agnel College, Pilar in the first semi-finals on October 7.
