PANJIM: Holy Cross High School, Bastora, clinched the sub-junior boys and sub-junior girls titles at the Goa State Hockey Championships organised by the Goan Hockey, at the Peddem Sports Complex astro turf, Mapusa, recently.
In their respective finals, the girls outplayed St Jude High School, Betalbatim by 5-0 goals, with a fine hat-trick by Rutuja Kumbler in the 6th, 9th and 21st minutes. The other girls to get their names on the score sheet were Neha Karapurkar in 26th minute and Raunak Kumari in the 40th minute.
Though St Jude High School team is playing on the astro turf for the first time gave a good account of themselves by keeping the scoreline in a single digit. Aachal Pawan and Shaitsa Shaikh played well for the losers.
In the boys section, both teams played well but Holy Cross High School took the lead against Damodar English High School, Gudi, in the 8th minute through Karan Paswaskar, from the cross passed by Daksh Naik. Damodar English HS forward Malik got an opportunity to equalise but his efforts went in vain with good defence from the Holy Cross High School.
In the 26th minute of play, a sole run by Gaurav Shetty scored the second goal to increase the lead by 2-0 goals during the half time. Hard working Mrlvill Pereira made several attempts in the rival goal but Raj and Chetan were outstanding in the defence line.
At the prize distribution function, Benny Veiages gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners and runners-up (boys section), while Feral Furtado, former MLA, gave away the prize to the girls teams, in the presence of Anjulo Fernandes, Nelly Rodriguez, former Zilla Panchayat member and Abay Namskar, president Hockey South Goa District.
Carl D’Souza welcomed the gathering and later proposed a vote of thanks.
