MAPUSA: FC Goa Development Team continued their winning run with a hard fought 2-0 win over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Friday.
Romeo Fernandes re-signed and back donning the colours of FC Goa after his spell with ISL team Odisha Football Club opened the scoring in the 60th minute while Kapil Hoble was the other goal scorer in the 98th minute.
The win moved FC Goa level on nine points with Salgaocar Football Club who have played a match less as the league table gets more tighter with every match played.
FC Goa after their win over Dempo in the last outing started aggressively and nearly opened the scoring when the lively and pacey Delton Colaco teed up Kapil Hoble who swirled his marker and took a low shot which was well kept out by the diving Velsao keeper Presley Mascarenhas.
FC Goa had a glorious opportunity of taking the lead in the 32nd minute but Kapil Hoble who had stepped forward to take the penalty blasted the ball over the crossbar which was awarded by the referee after Velsao defender Peter Carvalho had brought down Vasim Inamdar inside the penalty box.
It was a similar fate at the other end when Velsao were awarded a penalty two minutes later when Peter Carvalho’s long ball found Savelon Cardozo’s who controlled the ball and let go a firm shot which hit Brian Faria’s arm. Jesloy Moniz who took the responsibility saw his spot kick being saved by FC Goa goalkeeper Antonio Da Silva to the dismay of the players and dugout.
FC Goa finally managed to open the scoring in the 54th minute when Delton darted down the right flank and squared the ball to Vasim Inamdar who cut inside and drilled a fierce shot which was well stopped by the Velsao keeper but the rolled to substitute Romeo Fernandes who calmly slotted the ball into the unguarded goal to give his side the lead.
Velsao kept pushing men forward and nearly found the equaliser when a well taken corner kick by Brian Mascarenhas found Peter Carvalho whose header was inches wide of the target.
Velsao SCC having made all the substitutions had to play the final minutes with ten men after Umesh Pujar had to be taken to the hospital after picking up a serious head injury which required lengthy treatment to stop the blood flow.
FC Goa got the second goal in the 98th minute when Joybert Fernandes shot was not well handled by keeper Presley Joybert Fernades and the ball came to Kapil Hoble who made amends for the missed penalty to tap the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
