MAPUSA: Unbeaten FC Goa managed to edge past Pilerne SC by 2-1 margin in the GFA’s Second Division League match played at Parra ground, on Thursday.
Young Gaurs playing with their lads mostly U-18 played their hearts out to score two first half goals.
Brandon Pereira opened the account in the 16th minute, scoring from inside the 18-yard box, while Franson Furtado superbly connected his header off a corner in the 34th minute to double his team lead.
Pilerne SC colts who were on the second spot with 18 points had an opportunity to take the first spot but with today’s defeat saw FC Goa top the league table with 23 points.
On crossing over, Pilerne SC came strongly and should have scored but Young Gaurs custodian Joyrin Braganza blocked a strong header from Chandan Govenkar.
However, in the 63rd minute, this time Darshan Pujari beat his rival defenders to nod the ball into the goal off Sainesh Gaonkar’s cross, 2-1.
Pilerne SC almost equalised in the closing stage of the match but Young Gaurs custodian Joyrin brought a smart save to collect Pujari header from close.
