MAPUSA: Defending champions FC Goa began their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Corps of Signals in GFA’s Professional league match played at Duler Stadium, here on Wednesday.
FC Goa were leading 2-0 at half time with goals from Lalawmpuia, Leander D’Cunha and Aaren D’Silva.
Young Gaurs keeper Antonio Da Silva was called in action early in the 7th minute to stop Vishnu Chhetri`s scorching 20-yard shot from finding the net.
Rush of blood saw Army men being reduced to ten men when their keeper Vikramjit Singh was given a straight red card by referee Pandurang Korgaonkar for a dangerous foul on striker Lalawmpuia.
Lalawmpuia who took the responsibility, made no mistake from the spot kick despite a valiant attempt by substitute keeper Binu Purushothaman, 1-0.
Young Gaurs consolidated their lead minutes later when Hayden Fernandes 30-yard free kick was somehow kept out by keeper Binu but the ball came to U 20 Flan Gomes who slid it in the path of a well-positioned Leander D`Cunha who slammed the ball home, 2-0. Signals had a decent chance of pulling a goal back in the 33rd minute when a neat build up started by Nim Bhutia saw him release the ball to Shuklab Bordoloi whose firm shot missed the side post by inches. Crossing end, substitute Aaren Da Silva fired in the third goal for Young Gaurs in the 64th minute from a pass by Flan Gomes to open their campaign with full three points.
