Finally, State to host Nat Games in 2019

15-day event scheduled in Goa from March 30 to April 14; Govt to support Churchill Brothers SC

PORVORIM: Laying all speculations to rest Sports Minister Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar on Tuesday announced that 15-day National Games will be held in Goa from March 30 to April 14.
“The year of 2019 will be written in golden words as we will host the prestigious National Games in Goa and for that I need support of everyone including sports associations, politicians, sportsmen and each and every Goan,” Azgaonkar informed replying to cut-motions on Sports in the House.
The sports minister continued that the needed infrastructure works are underway in full swing.
“Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has given full support and is giving us the necessary vitamins,” he quipped adding “with his blessing we will successfully host games, only his health should remain good.”
Azgaonkar felt that the National Games will be a great opportunity for the sportspersons from the State to show their talent.
“We will give opportunity to sportsperson and we will support associations in whatever way they want but in return they must give us maximum medals,” he said
Meanwhile, the sports minister said that the government will lease out all the major stadiums to the private companies.
“Stadiums will be given on lease as there is a large cost of maintenance involved, which is not easy,” he said.
Govt will support Churchill Brothers Sports Club
Sports Minister Babu Azgaonkar said that the State government under the leadership of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will continue to financially support the Churchill Brothers Sports Club, who have brought laurels to the State.
“It is not easy to continue running a football club for so many years and I congratulate Churchill Alemao for making the State proud,” he said.
Azgaonkar said that Churchill Brothers Sports Club have put Goa in national and international football map.
“It is Churchill, who has given footballers their due and I feel we need to support him. The government supported him with financial assistance of Rs 3 cr and will continue to do so,” the minister said.
