Five-Star Churchill Bros thump Vasco SC

PANJIM: Churchill Brothers ran riot over Vasco Sports Club with a 5-1 win in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League, played at Village Panchayat ground, Nagoa, on Wednesday.
Lalengzama Vangchhia (30’) and Mauvin Borges (72’) scored for the Red Machines while Lamgoulen Hangshing (64’) and Lalkhawpumawia (10’) scored from the spot kick for Churchill Brothers. Vasco SC’s Amit Das (61’) scored an own goal to help Churchill Brothers’ goal tally reach five. Micky Vaz (43’) scored for Vasco SC.
 Churchill Brothers took an early lead in the game when Vasco SC player Maindo Dadanuvoor tripped a Churchill Bros player in the box wherein the referee made no hesitation to point towards the penalty spot.
Lalkhawpuimawia stepped over and coolly converted from the spot.
In the 25th minute Suraj Mondal’s powerful header off a Micky Vaz corner was easily swallowed by the Churchill Brothers FC keeper James Kithan.
Churchill Brothers Zama missed a glorious chance to put his team ahead when he was set through on goal by Quan Gomes but the rival keeper Sanju Thapa did extremely well to block the effort.
 However, Zama didn’t disappoint in the next minute as he guided home from the right, this time he rolled the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Zama was set up by Quan.
At the other end, Vasco Sports Club had a chance to pull a goal back when they were awarded a penalty after Suraj was brought down in the box. Suraj who stepped up to take the spot kick shot way over the bar.
 Vasco SC managed to pull a goal back just before the break when Churchill Brothers FC defence failed to clear a cross played in by Altaf from the right flank and the ball fell to Micky Vaz who kept his composure infront of the goal as he placed in the bottom right corner, 1-2.
Churchill Brothers still had time to score when a quick counter attack which saw Wendell Coelho play an excellent pass to Darren on the right wing who covered some distance and played a ball in the box, with couple of Churchill Bros players in the box, Vasco’s Mainod was forced to clear the ball in the wrong direction which hit the cross bar and went out of play. 
Off the resultant corner kick, Nongmeikapam’s header was cleared from the goal by Vasco defender Bema.
The second half was more of a midfield battle as both teams main red possession but weren’t getting the end result.
After a barren 15 minutes, Churchill Brothers’s Mauvin Borges created couple of chances for his side. On seeing Kivi making a run upfront, Mauvin set up the striker but with just the keeper at his sight, he shot over the bar.
Vasco SC scored an own goal when Wendell Coelho squared the ball from the right which was missed by the keeper, however, before Churchill Bros Mauvin could reach, Anil cleared only to see his clearance guided into their own net by Amit.
After conceding the third, Vasco looked tired and soon Churchill Bros scored their fourth through Lamgoulem who dribbled past the keeper and scored to make it 4-1.
Churchill Brothers’ Shubert was brought down in the box by Vasco’s Olumide and Mauvin stepped over to score the fifth goal for the team from the spot.
There was a moment of magic when Mathew Colaco darted a run in the box and played a one-two pass to Micky Vaz, whose touch cracked the Churchill Brothers defence but after doing everything right, Mathew shot way off target with just the keeper to beat.
Vasco SC keeper Sanju came with a fine save to deny Churchill Brothers’ second half substitute Fredsan Marshall.
