PANJIM: “Football and football related activities are a big industry today. I sincerely believe football can be an industry here. Right now, the turnover will be Rs 70-80 crore.
The GFDC must start understanding the economic aspect of football,” stated Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. He was speaking at the first anniversary celebration of GFDC at Patto, here,  Monday.
Parrikar, who was presented a Jersey No 10 disclosed that he was a footballer in his schooling and college days but that his my parents had asked him what football would give him for his livelihood. “I had some potential, he said. But today football and football related acitivities are a big industry.”
Parrikar, the brain behind the launch of GFDC last year, was pleased with the progress his baby had made. “I must say GFDC has delivered beyond my expectations. This is a vibrant body,” acknowledged Parrikar.
The Chief Minister also explained why he had no hesitation in picking Dr Rufino Monteiro as the chairman and leaving the body entirely in his hands.
“I am constantly accused of not delegating work. I believe that delegation to a successful leader is a must and the key to success. To give it to an unfit person is a crime. With GFDC, I have never interfered. In fact, it is they who keep me informed of the plans. With Rufino, apart from the knowledge, his passionate interest in the game was equally important,” explained Parrikar.
Dr Rufino himself was pleased with the ground that the GFDC have covered. “Irrespective of political affiliations, we have gone everywhere. The interiors of Goa needed football. In Collem we had people asking for footballs so that they could start playing. The response has been great. In Pernem we have 350 trainees,” stated Dr Rufino.
GFDC member secretary Elvis Gomes explained how the apparent differences between them and the Goa Football Association – where he is the vice-president – have now disappeared. “The roles are now clearly defined. GFDC’s focus will be on the hinterland areas,” said Gomes, adding that the next football development centres will be launched at Canacona, Quepem, Sanquelim and Bicholim.
Shantaram Naik, GFDC member, proposed the vote of thanks.
