MARGAO: A first half strike by striker Melvin Fernandes helped Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club, Paroda to stun CRC Chinchinim 1-0 and cruse into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Dando Boys inter-village football tournament organized by Dando Boys Club, Benaulim at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim, Tuesday.
Fr Agnelo started tentatively while CRC began on an attacking note right from the word go. CRC muffed a golden opportunity when striker Jorax Fernandes broke free from the rival shackles and shot wide with only rival goalkeeper at his mercy.
Midway in the opening session, CRC tried to check their offensive play in an apparent bid to protect their citadel. Fr Agnelo took advantage of the situation and took the lead late in the first half when striker Melvin Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Crossing over, CRC went all-out and created many umpteen forays into the rival territory but failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Fr Agnelo had a couple of scoring opportunities but could not their forwards failed to find the net.
On Monday, Navelim Villagers Union prevailed over Nuvem Sports Club 5-4 via the tie-breaker to sail into the quarter-finals.
Navelim Villagers Union took control with veteran midfielder Domnic Cabral keeping his forwards Alvito Colaco and Sukhdev Arwade busy with a stream of passes.
Post resumption , Navelim held a slight edge over their opponents but could not score due to inept shooting by their forwards from ideal positions.
Navelim nearly struck the winner but striker Alvito Colaco’s header missed the mark narrowly.
Navelim had the last laugh in the tie-breaker.
