CHANDOR: Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda got the better of strong contenders St Anthony SC, Assolda 6-4 via tie-breaker in the final of the 14th Guirdolim Panchayat Cup, organised by Guirdolim Club, at Chandor ground, on Sunday.
Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda, dominated proceedings right from the word go and were rewarded in the very 6th minute when Sezvin Fernandes tapped the ball in following a goalmouth mele.
Stung by the unexpected goal, St Anthony SC, Assolda upped the ante and went all out to get the equaliser only to be denied by the Paroda defence led by veteran Pascoal Fernandes.
Agneas Vaz was the culprit for Assolda as he missed a sitter with only the Paroda keeper at his mercy. At the lemon break Paroda led 1-0.
Changing over, Assolda maintained their rhythm with periodic attacks on the Paroda goal but were denied on a couple of occassions by the Paroda keeper.
In the 50th minute, Fhezer Gomes’s low cross was tapped in by Kevin Vaz to give Assolda the equaliser.
Soon after Manesh Oliveira of Paroda nearly scored but his free kick hit the crossbar and went out of play. The match ended with the score tied at 1-1.
In the resulting tie-breaker, Manesh Oliveira, Kanchan Kiro, Raston Costa, Staunton D’costa and Socor Colaco were on target for Paroda while Kevin Vaz, Agneas Vaz, Benson Fernandes and Jovito Carvalho scored for Assolda from the spot, Fayden Pereira’s kick hit the goalpost and went out thus handing over victory to Paroda. The winners received Rs 40,000 while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000.
Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes along with guests of honour, Sudesh Bhise, Piety Fernandes and Raymond D’cruz in the presence of Minaxi Gaonkar, ZP Guirdolim, Malisha Carvalho, Sarpanch Guirdolim, Celina Furtado, Sarpanch Chandor, Agnelo, Sarpanch of Macazana, panch members of Guirdolim and Chandor and executive committee members of GFA, Arnaldo Costa, Raju Banaulikar and Anthony Pango.
