PANJIM: Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda, defeated new challengers Uguem Rising Club by a solitary first-half goal to cruise into the quarter-finals of Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Thursday.
Fr Agnelo started the game on an attacking note right from the word go, with Salvito Fernandes and Selton Fernandes penetrating the Uguem Rising Club defence at ease and straying passes to Jason Fernandes in the penalty area. But Jason wasted at least two gilt edge chances to score. Jason was the provider to skipper Anthony Dias, when his accurate short pass to Anthony helped him to tap the ball in, past Jerry Dias, the Uguem Rising Club keeper to take a 1-0 lead.
The Uguem boys led by their captain Israel Gomes played a short passing game, which was not suitable for the slushy ground on account of sudden downpour during the game, instead of playing the long ball. However, Flezer Gomes and Lawren Fernandes did attempt long-range shots which were well collected by Pravesh Borkar, the Fr Agnelo YSC keeper.
Towards the fag-end, Asiyo of Uguem made a last-ditch attempt to equalise when he lobbed the ball to unmarked Alvy Fernandes in the goal area, whose hasty shot was wide off the mark, to confirm Fr Agnelo YSC win.
