Fr Agnelo YSC Paroda clinch Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup

RAIA: Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda, rode on the 8th minute strike by Resan Costa to clinch the 2nd Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup 2023 football tournament organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Saturday.

It was Roston Lima who did the footwork when he dodged past Alfred Noronha and Roque Borges of Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda, to shoot into the goal which was punched by their keeper Karol Soares back into the game on the left sideline towards Denzil Vaz, who gave a neat pass to Resan to score the only goal of the final.

Don Bosco Oratory fought back with Elroy Barreto and Hanslum Furtado moving the ball upfront with Cliff Barreto taking a snap shot from 20 yards which was punched by Pravesh Borkar for a corner.

Crossing over, Don Bosco Oratory continued to dominate the match, but good goalkeeping by Pravesh Borkar prevented them from scoring. In fact, a close-range effort by Velton D’Souza hit the goal-post and went out of play. One final opportunity was missed by Rishabh Karapurkar to restore parity when he shot wide from a hand-shaking distance to confirm Fr Agnelo YSC as the champions.

Dixon Vaz, sarpanch of Cavelossim Village Panchayat and founder president of Goan Seamen Association of India was the chief guest and gave away the winners’ trophy and cash prize of Rs 60,000 to Fr Agnelo YSC Paroda, while Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, parish priest was the guest of honour and gave away the runners-up trophy and cash prize of Rs 40,000 to Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda.

Other dignitaries present were Anthony Pango, GFA senior vice-president South Goa; Constancio Rodrigues, GFA referee in-charge South Goa; Cavelossim Villagers in UK Johnson Barreto, Welflyn Caldeira and Savio Fernandes. Also present were Fr Saude Pereira, Sandra D’Costa, Elvino Afonso, ex-president of the club, panch John Barreto and Valerie Vaz.
