MARGAO: A second half strike by striker Francis Baretto helped Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club overcome United Club of Benaulim 1-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Varca Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Varca Sports Club, at Varca ground, Tuesday .
Areal held the upper hand throughout the match but Benaulim goalkeeper Constancio D’Silva restricted the score to 1-0 as he was the stumbling block for Areal forwards and brought up superlatives saves.
The all-important goal came in the 21st minute when Francis Baretto bulge the net off through pass from Agio Antao.
Benaulim was subdued lot as they failed to function as a cohesive unit.
Post resumption, Areal continued to enjoy better share of exchanges but Benaulim goalkeeper effected superb saves. Francis was adjudged man-of-the-match.
On Monday, Navelim Villagers Union piped Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem 1-0. Miccky Colaco scored the all-important goal.
