Gaura Vaddo, Calangute defeated Barcelona Boys, Vaddem 2-0 to emerge champions in 1st All-Goa 7-a-side football tournament organised by Young Boys of Calangute at Calangute Association ground, here, on Saturday.
In a keenly contested final, after a goalless first half, Gaura Vaddo Boys shot into lead through Pratnesh.
Down by a goal, Vaddem boys fought back but found it difficult to find the net.
Gaura Vaddo Boys consolidated the lead through Rajkumar with few minutes remaining and lift the Young Boys Cup.
Gaura Vaddo Boys, Calangute became the proud recipients of the trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 while Barcelona Boys, Vaddem had to be content with the runners-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs 7,000.
Agnelo Fernandes, MLA and EDC Chairman and Filipe Dias, ex-referee and sports promoter who were the chief guest and guest of honour respectively gave away the prizes.
Anthony Menezes, ex-zilla parishad member and Jerry D’Souza vice-president of Calangute Association were the special invitees.
Following prizes were also given away: Best disciplined team: Beach Boys A, Calangute. Best goalkeeper Valentino (David’s Place, Calangute). First scorer of finals: Pratnesh (Gaura Vaddo Boys). Best defender: Milagres (Barcelona Boys). Best striker and younger player of the tournament: Alesh (Barcelona Boys).
Earlier in the semi-finals, Barcelona Boys, Vaddem got the better of David’s Place while Gaura Vaddo Boys, Calangute defeated Parra Boys by identical 2-0 margins.
In all, 24 teams participated in the tournament including Young Chalengers of Orda-Candolim, Mad Max Taleigao, Presa di Goa-Nagoa, Goa Velha Boys, Dam Dum Boys-Valpoi, St. Peter Boys Tivai Vaddo- Calangute, Young Boys of Baga, Parra Boys and other teams from Calangute and neighbouring areas.
Marcelino Pereira welcomed. Later, he proposed the vote of thanks.
The tournament was organised by Young Boys of Calangute led by the organising secretary Deggie Cardozo, Marcelino Pereira (president), Francis Fernandes (secretary).
The semi-finals and finals were refereed by Seby D’Costa.
