PANJIM: Vice President of Goa Badminton Association Sandeep Heble has urged the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) to intimate the players well in advance on the selection trials for badminton school nationals.
Heble in a letter to V.M Prabhudesai stated that a few days back, the DSYA conducted selection trials in badminton to select the Goa team for the Nationals School Games championship. The press note in the newspapers, intimating the players about the said selection trials, appeared on the same day when the selection trials were held and due to this, many budding young players could not attend the trials and therefore were not eligible for selections.”
“In a few categories, hardly two or three participants turned up while in categories like the under-19 boys, there was not even a single participant. Last year too, our badminton players missed out as no selection trials were conducted and there was no team to represent our state at the School Nationals,” it stated.
“The School Nationals is a source of encouragement to our youngsters where several outstanding Junior National shuttlers also participate. Participating alongside them and even watching these top players in action can give our own players a great sense of motivation and exposure,” Heble mentioned.
“As such, it would be appropriate if the selection trials can be held afresh with reasonable intimation of a few days given to the players, enabling a fair and proper selection process which has not happened in the present case. Advance intimation about the trials could also be given to the Goa Badminton Association, which could promote the trials amongst its eligible registered players,” he further appealed.
“Your immediate action in the above matter will serve the cause of the badminton players’ well, who will be missing out otherwise,” concluded Heble.
