MAPUSA: Geno Football Club continued on their winning run as they walked past Vasco Sports Club 3-1 in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Monday.
Geno FC came into the match with a win over FC Goa, while Vasco SC held Dempo Sports Club.
After this win Geno FC have 12 points from six matches, while Vasco SC stay on seven points from six matches.
Both the teams did play aggressively where Geno FC did come close in opening their account twice through striker Sankalp Kankonkar, who eventually scored in the 24th minute after dribbling past host of defenders and placed the ball into the far corner of the goal 1-0.
Port Towners did make number of inroads where Hijam Singh, who worked tirelessly in the midfield and assisted in the defence did keep his partners busy upfront Ngulgoulal Singsit and skipper Reuben Letkhotinchon but the last line of Geno FC defence marshalled by stopper backs Liston Cardozo and George D’Souza gave them very little space to penetrate.
In the 36th minute, Geno FC almost doubled their lead but Vasco SC’s custodian Roni Das paired Umesh Pujar header before Sarino Fernandes could connect the ball into the goal.
In the last five minutes before the breather, Port Towners came with three close attempts at the rival goal but Hijam’s header went just past the goal post. While a stinging free-kick by skipper Reuben was headed for a corner by Geno FC’s defender Umesh Pujar.
Just five minutes after the breather, Port Towners levelled terms when a perfect cross by substitute Vellington Almeida saw Ngulgoulal Singsit rise high above the Geno FC defenders to head the ball into the goal, 1-1.
Geno FC pumped in two quick goals in the 53rd minute through substitute Velito Cruz from the penalty spot and substitute Lloyd Cardozo who gave finishing touches to Vasim Inamdar spadework, 3-1.
At the other end, Geno FC’s custodian Crysler Afonso brought back to back superlative saves to deny Mangminlal Haokip and Ngulgoulal Singsit from scoring.
Another glorious chance went a begging for Vasco SC, when a scorching left footer from inside the 18-yard box was blocked by Geno FC’s goalkeeper.
In the 86th minute, Geno FC’s Velito Cruz was sent off by Referee Valenton Fernandes for fisting rival player.
In this match, Referee Valentino flashed five caution cards, one red card and also a caution card to Geno FC’s head coach Francisco Da Costa. Three caution cards to Vasco SC players.
